Assistant and Anaesthesia: - Assistant Fee: The service is eligible for a surgical assistant (suffix 'B'), payable based on 6 base units plus time units as per the Schedule (-). - Anaesthesia Fee: The service is eligible for an anaesthetist (suffix 'C'), payable based on 6 base units plus time units as per the Schedule (-). This procedure is subject to general surgical payment rules and may be eligible for various premiums, including those for age, after-hours services, and trauma.
When to Use
- Use S601 for the surgical excision of a symptomatic spermatocele arising from the epididymis.
- Use S601 for the excision of a spermatic granuloma when it is distinct and requires formal surgical removal rather than simple aspiration.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S601 if the procedure is limited to simple aspiration of a spermatocele, as this does not meet the criteria for an excision.
- Avoid billing S601 in conjunction with S602 (epididymectomy) unless the procedures are performed on separate anatomical sites or represent distinct, non-overlapping surgical tasks.
