S715 – Excision of cyst(s) or benign tumour(s)
OHIP Urology Code — FEMALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
S715 is a surgical procedure for the excision of one or more cysts or benign tumours from the vagina. As a surgical procedure, it includes all associated common and specific surgical elements defined in the Schedule of Benefits. The fee for the surgeon (suffix 'A') is a set amount. The fees for an assistant (suffix 'B') and an anaesthetist (suffix 'C') are calculated based on a system of basic units and time units.
When to Use
- Use S715 for the surgical excision of a Bartholin's cyst or other benign vaginal cysts when simple incision and drainage is insufficient.
- Use S715 for the removal of benign vaginal tumours such as leiomyomas or fibromas located within the vaginal wall.
- Use S715 when the procedure is performed in an operating room or minor procedure room as a distinct surgical event rather than a simple office-based biopsy.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S715 for simple incision and drainage of a Bartholin's cyst; use the appropriate I&D code instead.
- Avoid billing S715 in conjunction with a pelvic examination or consultation on the same day unless the surgical procedure was distinct and separately identifiable.
- Do not attempt to bill S715 multiple times if multiple cysts are removed; the code is defined as 'cyst(s)' and is generally considered a single procedural fee regardless of the number of lesions excised.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly describes the excision of the lesion to justify the surgical fee over a minor office procedure code.
- If the patient is under 16 years of age, remember to apply the appropriate age-based premium to the surgeon's fee to maximize reimbursement.
