S727
S727 – Ovarian debulking
OHIP Urology Code — FEMALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Ovarian debulking, for ovarian carcinoma of stage 2C, 3B, 3C, or 4 and may include hysterectomy, omentectomy, bowel resection, one or more biopsies and/or resection of pelvic peritoneum
When to Use
- Use S727 for primary cytoreductive surgery in patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma (Stage 2C, 3B, 3C, or 4) when performing multi-visceral resections such as omentectomy or bowel resection.
- Use this code when the surgical procedure includes a hysterectomy performed specifically as part of the debulking process for advanced-stage ovarian cancer, rather than as a standalone gynecological procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S727 for early-stage ovarian cancer (Stage 1 or 2A/2B) will result in automatic rejection, as the code is strictly restricted to advanced stages 2C through 4.
- Attempting to unbundle and bill additional codes for omentectomy or pelvic peritoneum resection is incorrect, as these procedures are inclusive to the S727 fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly documents the cancer stage (2C, 3B, 3C, or 4) to satisfy audit requirements for the specific clinical conditions mandated by the Schedule of Benefits.
- If the procedure is performed after hours, remember to append the appropriate after-hours premium code, such as E400C for the anaesthesiologist, to maximize the total claim value.
