S780 – Biopsy of ovaries by laparotomy
OHIP Urology Code — FEMALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Biopsy of the ovaries performed via laparotomy. This surgical procedure involves an open abdominal incision to access and obtain tissue samples from the ovary or ovaries for pathological examination. Per the Note on page , this fee includes a unilateral or bilateral procedure.
When to Use
- Use S780 when performing an open surgical biopsy of the ovary via laparotomy for diagnostic purposes.
- Use this code for both unilateral and bilateral ovarian biopsies, as the fee is inclusive of both scenarios.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S780 in addition to more extensive ovarian procedures like oophorectomy (S782) or salpingo-oophorectomy (S784), as the biopsy is considered part of the more definitive surgery.
- Avoid billing S780 for laparoscopic biopsies; this code is strictly for procedures performed via laparotomy (open incision).
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly documents the laparotomy approach to support the use of S780 over laparoscopic codes.
- If performing a bilateral biopsy, do not attempt to add a second unit or modifier, as the fee is already inclusive of both ovaries.
