X447 – Repeat MRI sequence
OHIP Laboratory Code — MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) · Schedule of Benefits
Repeat magnetic resonance imaging of the breast (unilateral or bilateral), involving an additional plane or a different pulse sequence. This service is a follow-up to an initial multislice sequence scan (X446) and is limited to a maximum of 3 repeats.
When to Use
- Use X447 when a clinical need arises for an additional pulse sequence or plane immediately following the initial X446 multislice scan to better characterize a breast lesion.
- Apply this code when the initial X446 scan is insufficient for diagnostic clarity and a repeat sequence is required to confirm findings within the same imaging session.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing X447 more than 3 times per initial X446 scan will result in automatic rejection due to the hard limit on repeat sequences.
- Attempting to bill X447 for breast biopsy guidance is strictly prohibited and will lead to claim recovery upon audit.
- Billing X441 or X445 on the same day as X447 by the same physician is a common error that triggers claim rejection.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the primary X446 code is billed first, as X447 is strictly a follow-up service dependent on the initial multislice scan.
- Verify that the clinical documentation clearly justifies the necessity of the additional plane or pulse sequence to support the repeat billing.
