X458
X458 – MRE for liver fat/iron quantification
OHIP Laboratory Code · Schedule of Benefits
Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) for quantification of fat and/or iron deposition in the liver
When to Use
- Use X458 specifically when the MRI protocol is ordered to quantify hepatic steatosis (fat) or iron overload (hemochromatosis) using MRE sequences.
- Bill X458 in conjunction with X451 when performing a comprehensive abdominal MRI that includes specialized liver quantification sequences.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing X458 as a standalone procedure when it is intended to be an add-on sequence to a primary abdominal MRI (X451).
- Attempting to bill X458 for general liver imaging that does not involve specific MRE-based fat or iron quantification protocols.
Billing Tips
- Ensure X458 is only submitted by the anaesthesiologist if they are providing services during the procedure, as the professional/technical components are typically covered by hospital global funding.
