Z250 – Chronic Electrical Stimulation
OHIP Psychiatric Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Z250 is a surgical procedure for Chronic Electrical Stimulation (not to include T.E.N.S.) external or internal. As a surgical procedure listed in the Musculoskeletal System section of the Schedule, the fee is for the surgeon's service (suffix A) and is subject to standard surgical payment rules. Associated services such as surgical assistant (suffix B) and anaesthesia (suffix C) are calculated based on basic and time units. This service is not payable for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (T.E.N.S.).
When to Use
- Use Z250 for the surgical implantation of permanent neurostimulator leads or pulse generators intended for chronic pain management or movement disorders.
- Use Z250 for the surgical revision or replacement of internal chronic electrical stimulation hardware when the procedure involves invasive musculoskeletal access.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z250 for T.E.N.S. (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is strictly prohibited and will result in claim rejection or audit recovery.
- Attempting to bill Z250 in conjunction with non-surgical office visits for routine device checks is a common error; ensure the service meets the definition of a surgical procedure.
- Failure to document the specific surgical nature of the stimulation hardware can lead to confusion with non-surgical pain management modalities.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the procedure is performed in a recognized surgical setting to support the claim as a surgical procedure under the Musculoskeletal System section.
- Always append the appropriate suffix (A for surgeon, B for assistant, C for anaesthesia) to ensure the claim processes correctly against the Schedule of Benefits.
