Z259 – Temporal - unilateral
OHIP Psychiatric Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
A surgical procedure for unilateral onlay bone grafts or alloplastic reconstruction to the temporal region of the face. This procedure is performed when it is not a component of a standard osteotomy for reconstruction. Commentary: Alloplastic materials that may be used include high density polyethylene, titanium mesh, resorbable mesh plus composites, calcium phosphate bone cements, and other materials ().
When to Use
- Use Z259 for the placement of a titanium mesh or high-density polyethylene implant to correct a unilateral temporal depression or contour deformity.
- Use this code when performing a standalone alloplastic reconstruction that is not integrated into a larger, multi-site osteotomy procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z259 in conjunction with a major osteotomy code (e.g., Z253-Z258) is a common audit trigger, as Z259 is intended for procedures independent of standard osteotomy reconstruction.
- Failing to include E553 when using banked bone or bone substitutes results in lost revenue, as E553 is specifically permitted as an add-on for this code.
Billing Tips
- Always append the trauma premium if the procedure is performed for acute injury management, as Z259 is eligible for this adjustment.
