When to Use
- Use Z262 when performing bilateral onlay augmentation of the frontal bone using alloplastic materials like titanium mesh or high-density polyethylene for contour correction.
- Select this code for bilateral frontal reconstruction following trauma or congenital deformity when the procedure is distinct from a standard osteotomy.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z262 in conjunction with a standard osteotomy code is a common audit trigger, as the Schedule explicitly excludes this code from being part of a standard osteotomy.
- Failing to bill the E553 add-on code when using banked bone or bone substitutes results in lost revenue for the cost of materials used during the reconstruction.
Billing Tips
- Always append the E553 code to your claim when utilizing bone substitutes or banked bone to ensure you are compensated for the additional materials used during the Z262 procedure.
