Z296 – Fiberoptic endoscopy of upper airway - with flexible endoscope
OHIP Psychiatric Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This procedure involves a diagnostic evaluation of the upper airway, including the nose, hypopharynx, or larynx, using a flexible endoscope. This code is designated as an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP), which has specific rules regarding billing with other assessments on the same day. It is payable only when it is the sole operative procedure performed during the patient encounter.
When to Use
- Use Z296 for diagnostic flexible nasolaryngoscopy when performed as the sole procedure to evaluate dysphonia, chronic cough, or suspected upper airway obstruction.
- Use Z296 when performing a standalone flexible endoscopic examination of the larynx or hypopharynx in an office or clinic setting.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z296 alongside a consultation or assessment code on the same day is a frequent cause of rejection, as Z296 is an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP).
- Submitting Z296 with Z292 on the same date of service will result in an automatic rejection, as they are mutually exclusive.
Billing Tips
- If a significant, unrelated problem is addressed during the same visit, ensure the assessment is billed with the appropriate diagnostic code and the procedure is clearly separated to comply with IOP rules.
- Always verify if the patient has had a major pre-operative visit within the last 12 months, as this dictates whether a minor or partial assessment can be billed on the same day as the Z296.
