Z299 – Rigid endoscopy of upper airway
OHIP Psychiatric Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Fiberoptic endoscopy of the upper airway (nose, hypopharynx or larynx) with a rigid endoscope, for diagnostic evaluation, or to facilitate biopsy or surgical treatment of pathology in the posterior nasal cavity, hypopharynx or larynx. This is an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP). See for rules regarding IOPs.
When to Use
- Use Z299 for diagnostic rigid endoscopy of the larynx or hypopharynx when the procedure is performed as a standalone diagnostic evaluation.
- Select Z299 when performing a rigid endoscopic examination to facilitate a biopsy or minor surgical intervention in the posterior nasal cavity or larynx.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z299 alongside a consultation or major assessment on the same day will trigger a rejection because it is an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP).
- Confusing Z299 with Z296; ensure the scope type (rigid vs. flexible) matches the code definition to avoid audit discrepancies.
Billing Tips
- As an IOP, ensure that if you perform a major assessment within 12 months, you only claim a minor or partial assessment on the same day as the Z299.
