As an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP) indicated by the Z prefix, specific billing rules apply regarding pre-operative assessments (see ). The '#' prefix indicates that for services performed in a hospital, the premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel are funded by the hospital's global budget and cannot be charged to the patient.
When to Use
- Use Z310 when performing a nasal biopsy that requires general anaesthesia, regardless of the number of specimens taken.
- Use Z310 when performing a nasal biopsy under local anaesthesia specifically when multiple distinct specimens are collected from different sites.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z310 for a single-site nasal biopsy under local anaesthesia, which should be billed under Z309 instead.
- Failing to recognize Z310 as an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP), which precludes billing a concurrent office visit or consultation on the same day unless it meets specific criteria for a separate, unrelated service.
- Attempting to bill for hospital equipment or supplies, which is strictly prohibited by the '#' prefix for procedures performed in a hospital setting.
Billing Tips
