Double Balloon enteroscopy (all-inclusive procedural fee).
When to Use
- Use Z588 when performing a double balloon enteroscopy to investigate obscure gastrointestinal bleeding or suspected small bowel pathology.
- Choose Z588 instead of Z584 (small bowel push enteroscopy) when the clinical complexity requires the double balloon technique to reach deeper segments of the small intestine.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing additional endoscopic codes like biopsies or other procedural services on the same day is prohibited as Z588 is an all-inclusive fee.
- Failing to bill E250 alongside Z588 will result in significant underpayment, as the base fee covers only the procedural access and not the time-intensive nature of the enteroscopy.
Billing Tips
- Always calculate and submit the total procedural time in 15-minute increments using E250 to ensure appropriate compensation for the duration of the procedure.
