Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a surgical procedure for the conization of the cervix. # Prefix Rule This service is designated with a '#' prefix. According to the rules on page of the Schedule: - When performed in a hospital, the premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel are funded by the hospital's global budget. - When provided in an Integrated Community Health Services Centre (ICHSC), these costs are funded under the facility costs as per the Integrated Community Health Services Centres Act, 2023. - Patients cannot be charged for these facility components when the service is rendered outside of a hospital or ICHSC.
When to Use
- Use Z766 specifically for the excision of cervical transformation zones or lesions via loop electrosurgical excision procedure.
- Use Z766 when performing a cervical conization; do not bill S744 (cervical biopsy) in addition to Z766 as the biopsy is considered part of the excision procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z766 alongside a consultation or assessment code on the same day is often rejected unless the assessment is for a separate, unrelated clinical issue.
- Attempting to bill Z766 with Z729 (cervical cauterization) is considered unbundling, as the excision procedure inherently includes the necessary local hemostasis.
