Z776Fetal blood sampling

OHIP Psychiatric Code — OBSTETRICS · Schedule of Benefits

Fetal blood sampling is an invasive diagnostic procedure to obtain a blood sample from the fetus. This service is listed under High Risk Pregnancies in the Obstetrics section of the Schedule. It may be performed as an independent procedure or as a component of a fetoscopy (see Z773).

When to Use

  • Use Z776 when performing a standalone percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS) for diagnostic purposes, such as fetal anemia assessment or karyotyping.
  • Use this code when the procedure is performed independently of a fetoscopy, as it is not separately billable if Z773 is claimed.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing Z776 in addition to Z773 will result in an automatic rejection, as the fetoscopy fee is inclusive of the blood sampling component.
  • Attempting to claim after-hours premiums (E409 or E410) without documenting the non-elective nature of the procedure will lead to audit adjustments.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the procedure is clearly identified as non-elective in your records to support the application of E409 or E410 premiums when performed outside standard hours.
