Percutaneous surgical procedure for the decannulation (removal) of a circulatory assist device. As per the note on :, this service includes the repair of the artery. As a surgical procedure, this service includes the common and specific elements of surgical services, which covers aspects such as pre-operative evaluation and post-operative follow-up.
When to Use
- Use Z781 when performing the percutaneous removal of a circulatory assist device, such as an Impella or similar percutaneous ventricular assist device.
- Use this code specifically when the procedure includes the necessary arterial repair at the site of the cannula insertion.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z781 in conjunction with Z744 for the same site, as the arterial repair is already bundled into the Z781 fee.
- Avoid billing Z781 as an add-on to other surgical procedures unless the decannulation is a distinct, separate surgical event from the primary procedure.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the claim includes the appropriate age premium if the patient is between two and five years old, as Z781 is eligible for the 15% increase under the Part Z surgical rules.
