- Use Z744 when performing the open surgical removal of a circulatory assist device, such as an Impella or ECMO cannula, where arterial repair is required.
- Select Z744 for the definitive surgical decannulation procedure, ensuring you do not bill R815 for the arterial repair as it is inclusive to this code.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing R815 in addition to Z744 will result in an automatic rejection, as the arterial repair is considered a component of the decannulation fee.
- Claiming the surgical assistant fee directly under Z744 will fail; you must use M400B and provide the required documentation to the medical consultant for authorization.
Billing Tips
- When claiming for a surgical assistant, submit the claim using M400B and include a letter from the surgeon justifying the necessity of the assistant to avoid payment denial.
