Z940
Z940 – Vertebral needle biopsy
OHIP Psychiatric Code — SPINAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Vertebral needle biopsy is a surgical procedure performed on the musculoskeletal elements of the spine.
When to Use
- Use Z940 for percutaneous needle biopsies of the vertebral body where no open surgical approach is required.
- Use Z940 when performing a diagnostic tissue sampling for suspected malignancy or infection in a vertebral body, provided it does not involve an open incision as described in N546, N547, N551, or N552.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z940 in conjunction with N546, N547, N551, or N552 will result in a rejection, as these codes are mutually exclusive alternatives for spinal biopsies.
- Attempting to bill Z940 alongside an open spinal procedure code will trigger a rejection due to the restriction on billing multiple Spinal Surgical Procedures on the same day.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the procedure is documented as a needle biopsy to justify the use of Z940 over the higher-valued open surgical biopsy codes.
