A001Minor assessment

OHIP General Listings Code — CONSULTATIONS AND VISITS · Schedule of Benefits

A minor assessment includes one or both of the following: a. a brief history and examination of the affected part or region or related to a mental or emotional disorder; or b. brief advice or information regarding health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment and/or prognosis.

When to Use

  • Billing for a brief follow-up appointment to check on a minor, resolved condition, such as a simple rash or a mild cough, where no new issues have arisen.
  • Coding a quick consultation for a patient seeking advice on a minor ailment, like a common cold or a sprained ankle, where a brief history and advice are provided without a full examination.
  • Using A001 for a patient presenting with a single, uncomplicated symptom that requires minimal investigation and advice, such as a sore throat or a minor burn.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing A001 when the patient's condition requires a more comprehensive history and examination, which would be better coded as A007 (Intermediate assessment).
  • Submitting A001 for a follow-up visit that addresses multiple or complex issues, as this level of complexity warrants a higher assessment code.
  • Using A001 for a new patient encounter where a more thorough initial assessment is typically required, unless the presenting issue is exceptionally minor and self-limiting.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure documentation clearly reflects 'brief history and examination of the affected part or region' or 'brief advice or information' to support the A001 code.
  • A001 is not payable with special visit premiums when rendered in a patient's home, unlike some other assessment codes.
