A008 – Mini assessment

A mini assessment is rendered when an assessment of a patient for an unrelated non-WSIB problem is performed during the same visit as an assessment of a WSIB related problem for which only a minor assessment (A001) was rendered.
When to Use
- A patient presents with a sprained ankle from a WSIB-related injury and also requests a refill for their hypertension medication during the same visit. The WSIB component is billed as A001.
- A patient attends for a follow-up of a WSIB-related back strain, for which only a minor assessment (A001) is appropriate, and also reports a new, unrelated rash. The rash assessment is billed as A008.
- During a visit for a WSIB-related knee injury (billed as A001), the patient mentions a sore throat that developed yesterday. The physician assesses the sore throat, billing A008 for this unrelated issue.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A008 when the WSIB component of the visit is more than a minor assessment (e.g., A007 or higher).
- Billing A008 for the WSIB-related problem instead of the unrelated problem, or billing it for both components of the visit.
- Submitting A008 when the physician also bills for a different or higher-level assessment for the non-WSIB problem during the same encounter.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the WSIB-related problem is billed as A001; A008 is specifically for the *unrelated* non-WSIB issue in this mixed-problem visit.
- Verify that no other assessment code (other than A001 for the WSIB component) is submitted for the non-WSIB problem, as this would make A008 ineligible.
