A010 – GP Focused Practice Consultation by Video

A consultation rendered by a GP Focused Practice Physician who completes a full, relevant history of the presenting complaint and detailed examination of the affected part(s), region(s), or system(s) needed to make a diagnosis, and/or exclude disease, and/or assess function, provided via video.
When to Use
- Bill A010 when a GP Focused Practice Physician receives a referral via video for a patient with a new, complex dermatological issue requiring a detailed visual assessment and management plan, distinct from a routine follow-up.
- Use A010 for a GP Focused Practice Physician providing a virtual consultation for a patient with a new onset of neurological symptoms, where a thorough history and visual neurological exam via video are performed.
- A010 is appropriate when a GP Focused Practice Physician receives a referral for a patient with a new cardiac concern, and the consultation involves a detailed history and visual assessment of relevant signs via video, without requiring an in-person physical exam.
Common Pitfalls
- Claims for A010 will be reduced to a lesser assessment fee if the required written referral from a physician, NP, or dental surgeon is not documented in the chart.
- Submitting A010 without the 'A' suffix will result in rejection, as this suffix specifically denotes the video modality required for this service.
- Billing A010 for a patient with an existing, ongoing physician-patient relationship for the same problem may lead to claim rejection, as it's intended for new patient encounters for the specific issue.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the written report sent to the referring provider includes specific findings, opinions, and recommendations to meet documentation requirements for A010.
- When a video consultation for A010 necessitates an in-person encounter, do not bill A010; instead, bill only for the appropriate physical encounter service.

Consultation
A copy of the written request for the consultation, signed by the referring physician, nurse practitioner or dental surgeon must be kept in the consulting physician’s medical record, except in the case of a consultation which occurs in a hospital, long-term care institution or multi-specialty clinic where common medical records are maintained. In such cases, the written request may be contained on the common medical record.
The request identifies the consultant by name and/or the specialty being consulted, the referring physician, nurse practitioner or dental surgeon by name and billing number, and identifies the patient by name and health number.
The written request sets out the information relevant to the referral and specifies the service(s) required.
A written report (including findings, opinions, and recommendations) to the referring physician, nurse practitioner or dental surgeon.
The service must be rendered using a 'Verified-Virtual Visit Solution' (audio and video visualization).
The physician must complete a full, relevant history and a detailed examination of the affected parts/systems as medically appropriate via video.
A010 is designated as a 'Video Only' service in Appendix J.
If the requirements for a consultation (e.g., written request/report) are not met, the amount payable will be reduced to a lesser assessment fee.
