A partial assessment is a limited service that constitutes a history of the presenting complaint, the necessary physical examination, advice to the patient, and an appropriate record of the encounter.
When to Use
- Bill A014 for a pre-anaesthetic assessment when the patient's condition is stable and requires a brief history, focused examination, and minimal advice prior to a planned anaesthetic procedure.
- Use A014 when assessing a patient for a minor anaesthetic procedure where the complexity does not warrant a full assessment code like A013.
- A014 is appropriate for a post-operative anaesthetic follow-up visit that involves a brief check of the patient's recovery and any immediate concerns, distinct from a full re-assessment.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A014 for a pre-anaesthetic evaluation when the anaesthetic procedure is performed by the same physician on the same day; this is considered part of the anaesthesia service itself and is not separately billable.
- Submitting A014 for a patient encounter that involves a comprehensive history and physical examination, which would be more appropriately coded as A013 (Specific Assessment - Anaesthesia).
- Receiving a rejection for A014 when billed with E078, as Anaesthesia (01) is not an eligible specialty for the GP25 premium, which E078 is linked to.
Billing Tips
- If a partial assessment (A014) extends beyond 30 minutes due to patient complexity or unforeseen circumstances, consider billing the K001 (Detention) add-on code.
- When seeing hospital in-patients for a special visit requiring a partial anaesthetic assessment, ensure you bill A014 in conjunction with the appropriate C-prefix special visit premium.
