A236 – Repeat consultation

A repeat consultation is an additional consultation rendered by the same consultant, in respect of the same presenting problem, following care rendered to the patient by another physician in the interval following the initial consultation but preceding the repeat consultation.
When to Use
- Bill A236 when you see a patient for a follow-up on the same problem after they have been managed by another physician, and you are the original consultant.
- Use A236 instead of A235 if the patient saw another physician for the same problem between your initial consultation and this repeat consultation.
- A236 is not subject to the one-consultation-per-two-years limit that applies to A235, making it appropriate for ongoing management of complex issues after intervening care.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A236 when the patient has not been seen by another physician in the interval; this scenario would typically use A235.
- Failing to obtain a new written request from a referring provider for the repeat consultation, which is a mandatory requirement for A236.
- Not preparing and submitting a written report to the referring provider after the A236 service, as this is a key component of the consultation.
Billing Tips
- For virtual repeat consultations, remember to add the 'A' suffix and ensure the service was conducted via video, not just telephone.
- Ensure the patient's record clearly documents the intervening care by another physician and the specific problem being addressed in the A236 consultation.
