Medical Management of ectopic pregnancy – initial service when a physician renders an initial assessment and administration of cytotoxic medication(s) for the termination of an ectopic pregnancy. The cost of the drug(s) is not included in the fee for the service.
When to Use
- Bill A922 when a physician provides the initial assessment and personally administers (or supervises the administration of) cytotoxic medication, such as Methotrexate, for a confirmed ectopic pregnancy.
- This code is appropriate for the initial medical management of an unruptured ectopic pregnancy where surgical intervention is not immediately indicated.
- Use A922 for the first encounter where a physician diagnoses an ectopic pregnancy and initiates medical treatment, distinguishing it from A920 which is for early pregnancy termination/missed abortion.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A922 for a follow-up visit; A921 is the correct code for subsequent management of an ectopic pregnancy.
- Submitting A922 when the patient's diagnosis is not an ectopic pregnancy, as this is a specific requirement for the code.
