B966Travel Premium

OHIP Paediatrics Code — GENERAL PREAMBLE · Schedule of Benefits

A special visit premium payable for travel to a patient's home to provide palliative care services, as defined in the General Preamble.

When to Use

  • Bill B966 when travelling to a patient's private residence to provide palliative care, specifically when the patient is in the final year of life and not receiving aggressive treatment.
  • Use B966 in conjunction with an A-prefix assessment code (e.g., A001) when the visit is to a patient's home for palliative care, as distinct from a hospital or LTC setting.
  • B966 is appropriate for travel to a patient's home for palliative care, even if the physician also bills A945 for the palliative care consultation itself.

Common Pitfalls

  • Claims for B966 will be rejected if the physician travels between locations within the same hospital complex or long-term care facility, as this code is strictly for travel to a patient's home.
  • Do not bill B966 if the patient is being seen during scheduled rounds at a hospital or long-term care institution, or if the visit occurs at a facility open for scheduled patient diagnosis or treatment.
  • Ensure the patient meets the definition of palliative care (terminally ill, final year of life, no aggressive treatment) to justify the use of B966.

Billing Tips

  • B966 can be billed in addition to B998 (First person seen - Weekdays, Evenings, Sat/Sun/Holidays) or B997 (First person seen - Nights) when applicable for the first patient seen during those specific time periods.
  • Remember to document the time of the special visit on the medical record, as required for premium codes like B966.

Premium

For fee codes listed in Tables I, II, III, IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X the time at which the special visit takes place must be documented on the medical record ()

A travel premium is only eligible for payment for travel from one location to another location ("the destination"). Not eligible for payment when a physician is required to travel from one location to another within the same long-term care facility, hospital complex or within buildings situated on the same hospital campus ()

B966 is unique among travel premiums for having no maximum limit per time period.

Travel to and from the home is included in the assessment fee for A001/A007 under Table VI rules, but Table VII (Palliative Care) allows B966 separately.
