Concurrent care is a routine assessment rendered in hospital by a consultant following the consultant’s first major assessment of the patient when the family physician remains the most responsible physician (MRP) but the latter requests continued directive care by the consultant.
When to Use
- Use C088 when you have completed an initial consultation (C085) and the MRP requests your continued input on a specific plastic surgery issue while they retain primary responsibility for the patient.
- Use C088 for routine follow-up assessments of a surgical site or wound management in a hospital setting when you are not the MRP.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing C088 when you have assumed the role of MRP; in this case, you must switch to the appropriate MRP subsequent visit codes like C082.
- Exceeding the weekly frequency limits of 4 visits in the first week and 2 visits thereafter, which will lead to automatic rejection of the excess claims.
- Attempting to bill C088 on the same day as other subsequent visit codes or assessments by the same physician for the same patient.
Billing Tips
- Always append the C101 premium to C088 if the patient is located in an ICU or CCU to maximize the value of the visit.
- Ensure your documentation clearly reflects the MRP's request for directive care to justify the transition from a consultation to concurrent care billing.

C088 is specific to Plastic Surgery (08). Other specialties use different codes for concurrent care (e.g., C008 for GP, C018 for General Surgery).
If the physician becomes the MRP, they should bill the appropriate MRP subsequent visit codes (e.g., C082, C122) instead of C088.
Not eligible for Age-based fee premiums () or Special Visit Premiums () when rendered during routine rounds.
