When the anaesthetic services of more than one anaesthesiologist are necessary in the interest of the patient, the service provided by the second anaesthesiologist constitutes E001C.
When to Use
- Use E001C when a second anaesthesiologist is required for complex cases such as prolonged neurosurgical procedures or massive trauma where the patient's physiological stability necessitates dual-provider monitoring.
- Apply E001C for high-risk obstetric cases, such as a complicated cesarean section requiring an additional anaesthesiologist to manage maternal resuscitation or specialized monitoring while the primary provider manages the anaesthetic.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E001C for a Thoraco-abdominal aneurysm repair instead of the specific R803C code, which is the mandatory replacement code for that procedure.
- Failing to document the specific clinical justification for the second anaesthesiologist in the patient record, which is a primary trigger for OHIP audit rejections.
