Unless otherwise specified in the Schedule, when the anaesthetic services of more than one anaesthesiologist are necessary in the interest of the patient, the service provided by the second anaesthesiologist constitutes E001C: with the actual number of time units (based on the actual time assisting the first anaesthesiologist) added to 6 basic units.
When to Use
- Use E001C when a second anaesthesiologist is required for complex cases such as prolonged neurosurgical procedures or major vascular reconstructions where the patient's condition necessitates continuous, high-level anaesthetic monitoring by two specialists.
- Use E001C for cases involving massive hemorrhage or complex physiological instability where the primary anaesthesiologist requires a second specialist to manage resuscitation while the primary maintains airway and depth of anaesthesia.
Common Pitfalls
- A common rejection occurs when the claim lacks documentation of the specific start and end times for the second anaesthesiologist, which is a mandatory requirement under GP7:21.
- Billing E001C for routine cases where a second anaesthesiologist is present for educational purposes or convenience rather than clinical necessity is a high-risk audit trigger.
