E006C – Cancelled Surgery - Anaesthesia Services

When an anaesthetic has begun but the operation is cancelled prior to commencement of surgery, the service constitutes E006C with the actual number of time units added to 6 basic units for this service.
When to Use
- Use E006C when anaesthesia induction has occurred, but the surgical procedure is aborted before the surgeon makes an incision or commences the planned procedure.
- Use this code when the patient is already under the effect of anaesthesia, distinguishing it from a pre-operative cancellation which should be billed as a hospital visit.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E006C for cancellations occurring prior to the induction of anaesthesia, which is a common audit trigger; these must be billed as hospital visits instead.
- Failing to calculate the total units correctly by adding the 6 basic units to the actual time units spent from induction until the decision to cancel.
- Incorrectly using E006C when the surgery has already commenced; if the surgery has started, you must bill the full procedural anaesthesia fee based on the total time elapsed.
