An amount is payable for extra units in addition to basic units when an anaesthesiologist (or any physician providing anaesthetic services) administers an anaesthetic to an infant from 29 days to 1 year of age.
When to Use
- Use E009C when providing anaesthesia for elective surgical procedures on infants who have passed the newborn stage but have not yet reached their first birthday.
- Apply E009C in conjunction with procedural anaesthesia codes like E023C or E032C to capture the age-based complexity premium for this specific demographic.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E009C with E030C or E031C, as the Schedule of Benefits explicitly prohibits the addition of GP97 extra units to these specific nerve block procedural codes.
- Avoid confusing E009C with E014C; E009C is strictly for infants aged 29 days to 1 year, whereas E014C is reserved for newborns up to 28 days of age.
Billing Tips
