E018 – Anaesthesia premium - adult aged 80 years and older

An amount is payable for extra units in addition to basic units when an anaesthesiologist administers an anaesthetic to an adult aged 80 years and older.
When to Use
- Use E018 when providing anaesthesia for any surgical or diagnostic procedure to a patient who has reached their 80th birthday.
- Apply this premium alongside the primary anaesthesia procedure code (suffix C) for all elective or emergency surgeries where the patient meets the age criteria.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E018 in conjunction with E007C is a common error; these codes are mutually exclusive based on the patient's age.
- Failure to verify the patient's exact date of birth against the date of service often leads to automated rejections if the patient is under 80.
