E020ASA E - Emergency Anaesthesia Premium

OHIP Surgical Assists Code · Schedule of Benefits

ASA E - patient undergoing anaesthesia for emergency surgery which commences within 24 hours of operating room booking, to E022C, E017C or E016C.

When to Use

  • Use E020C when performing emergency surgery on an ASA III, IV, or V patient where the procedure commences within 24 hours of the OR booking.
  • Apply this premium alongside the appropriate ASA status code (E022C, E017C, or E016C) for urgent surgical interventions that meet the 24-hour booking threshold.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing E020C for ASA I or II patients, which will result in automatic rejection as the premium is restricted to ASA III-V.
  • Claiming E020C for elective cases booked more than 24 hours in advance, even if the patient is high-risk.
  • Failing to include the base ASA status code (E022C, E017C, or E016C) on the same claim, as E020C is a modifier and not a standalone service.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the OR booking time is clearly documented in the anaesthesia record to support the 'within 24 hours' requirement in the event of an audit.
