Enucleation is the surgical removal of the eyeball, leaving the eye muscles and remaining orbital contents intact. This service includes the option of placing a primary orbital implant at the time of surgery. As a surgical procedure, this service includes all related pre-operative and post-operative care as defined in the Schedule of Benefits. This service is eligible for payment to the surgeon (suffix A), assistant (suffix B), and anaesthetist (suffix C).
When to Use
- Use E102 for the surgical removal of the eyeball where the extraocular muscles and orbital contents are preserved, regardless of whether a primary implant is inserted.
- Select E102 when the clinical objective is enucleation; do not use E103 (Evisceration) for this procedure, as they are distinct surgical techniques with separate billing codes.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E102 in conjunction with E109 is strictly prohibited; the system will reject the claim as these procedures are mutually exclusive.
- Attempting to bill E102 and E103 on the same patient for the same operative session will trigger a rejection due to the restricted code list.

- Ensure the operative report clearly distinguishes the procedure as an enucleation to support the use of E102 over E103, as auditors look for specific mention of the removal of the entire globe while leaving orbital contents intact.
