E103 – Evisceration, with or without primary implant

Evisceration is the surgical removal of the contents of the eyeball, leaving the scleral shell and extraocular muscles intact. This procedure may optionally include the insertion of a primary implant into the scleral shell to maintain orbital volume. - Assistant fee is based on 6 base units plus time units. - Anaesthesia fee is based on 7 base units plus time units.
When to Use
- Use E103 when performing a primary evisceration for a blind, painful eye or intraocular malignancy where the scleral shell is preserved.
- Use this code when the procedure includes the insertion of an orbital implant into the scleral cavity to provide volume for a future prosthesis.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E103 in conjunction with E109 (Enucleation) is a hard rejection; choose the specific surgical approach performed.
