E184 – Inferior oblique muscle repair
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Surgical procedure for the correction of strabismus by operating on the inferior oblique muscle. This fee is per muscle treated. This procedure is eligible for assistant (suffix B) and anaesthesia (suffix C) services, with fees calculated based on basic and time units. This code can be billed in combination with other strabismus muscle surgery codes (E182, E183, E185) up to a maximum of 4 per day. Add-on codes for adjustable sutures (E949) and repeat procedures (E877) may also apply.
When to Use
- Use E184 specifically for the surgical recession or resection of the inferior oblique muscle to correct vertical or cyclovertical strabismus.
- Use this code when performing a primary inferior oblique procedure, distinct from horizontal muscle surgery (E182) or superior oblique surgery (E183).
Common Pitfalls
- Exceeding the maximum of 4 total strabismus procedures per day when combining E184 with E182, E183, or E185 will result in automatic rejection of the additional claims.
- Failing to document the use of adjustable sutures when billing E949, as this add-on is only payable when the specific technique is explicitly noted in the operative report.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the E877 repeat procedure code is applied to the primary surgical fee when performing a re-operation on the same muscle, which increases the base fee by 30%.
- Always apply the appropriate age-based premium (e.g., AGE_PREMIUM_LT16Y) to the E184 fee, as these are calculated on the surgical procedure fee and are not mutually exclusive with the base code.
