E388
E388 – Vertebroplasty combined with any other procedure, first level
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — SPINAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
E388 is an add-on code payable for performing a vertebroplasty (injection of bone cement) at the first vertebral level. This code is intended to be billed in addition to the fee for another primary spinal surgical procedure being performed during the same operative session. For vertebroplasty at additional levels, see E391.
When to Use
- Use E388 when performing a vertebroplasty in conjunction with a major spinal surgical procedure, such as a decompression or stabilization, at the same vertebral level.
- Use E388 as the primary code for the first level of vertebroplasty when the procedure is not the sole surgical intervention performed during the session.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E388 as a standalone procedure; N570 must be used instead if no other primary spinal surgery is performed.
- Failing to append E391 for additional levels; E388 only covers the first level, and subsequent levels must be billed separately using E391 to receive full compensation.
- Attempting to bill E388 alongside N570; these are mutually exclusive for the first level of service.
Billing Tips
- Always link E388 to the primary surgical procedure code on the claim to justify its status as an add-on procedure.
- Ensure the total number of levels treated is reflected by billing E388 for the first level and the appropriate number of E391 units for all subsequent levels.
