This service represents each additional level of kyphoplasty (balloon tamp and injection of bone cement) performed during the same operative session. It is payable as an add-on to either N583 (kyphoplasty as a sole procedure, first level) or E392 (kyphoplasty combined with any other procedure, first level).
When to Use
- Use E393 for each additional vertebral level treated beyond the first level when performing kyphoplasty as a standalone procedure (N583).
- Use E393 for each additional vertebral level treated when kyphoplasty is performed in conjunction with another primary surgical procedure (E392).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E393 for the first level treated; the first level must always be billed under the primary code (N583 or E392).
- Attempting to bill other spinal procedure codes alongside N583, which is prohibited by the Schedule of Benefits except for the addition of E393.
- Failing to specify the number of units for E393 when treating three or more levels, leading to underpayment.
