E487 – Resection of labrum

This code is an add-on to hip arthroscopy (R686) for the resection of the labrum. According to payment rules on page of the Schedule, E487 is not eligible for payment in addition to E488 (Repair of labrum).

When to Use

Use E487 when performing a debridement or resection of a torn or damaged labrum during a hip arthroscopy (R686).
Select E487 specifically when the labral pathology is irreparable, necessitating excision rather than reconstruction or refixation.

Common Pitfalls

Billing E487 in conjunction with E488 (Repair of labrum) will trigger an automatic rejection as these are mutually exclusive procedures.
Attempting to bill E487 as a standalone procedure without the primary hip arthroscopy code (R686) will result in a claim denial.
