E543Use of disposable EMG hypodermic electrode outside hospital

OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

E543 is payable for the use of a disposable EMG hypodermic electrode for EMG-guided botulinum toxin injections. It is an add-on service claimed in conjunction with either G877 (for one injection) or G878 (for two or more injections). This service is only payable when rendered outside of a hospital setting and is limited to a maximum of one per patient, per day.

When to Use

  • Use E543 when performing EMG-guided botulinum toxin injections in a private clinic setting using a disposable hypodermic needle electrode.
  • Claim E543 specifically when the procedure is billed with G877 or G878 to recover the cost of the single-use electrode.

Common Pitfalls

  • Submitting E543 for procedures performed within a hospital facility will result in an automatic rejection.
  • Billing E543 more than once per patient per day is prohibited, even if multiple injection sites are treated across different muscle groups.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the primary procedure code (G877 or G878) is present on the same claim, as E543 is strictly an add-on service.
