This service is an add-on to a primary cystoscopy procedure, such as `Z606 (Diagnostic cystoscopy) or Z607` (Repeat cystoscopy). It covers the insertion of a ureteric stent on a single side (unilateral). It is not payable in conjunction with E773 (with placement of ureteric stent past obstructing lesion) when performed for the same ureteric obstruction.
When to Use
- Use E818 when performing a routine unilateral ureteric stent placement during a cystoscopy procedure where E773 is not applicable.
- Apply this code when the primary procedure is Z606 or Z607 and the stent insertion is a secondary, distinct procedural component.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E818 alongside E773 for the same ureteric obstruction will trigger an automatic rejection as they are mutually exclusive.
- Attempting to bill E818 for bilateral stent placement is incorrect; this code is strictly for unilateral insertion and does not support quantity modifiers for both sides.
