E888
E888 – Resection of non-pituitary lesion(s) involving the sellar region extending to optic nerve(s), optic chiasm or hypothalamus
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — NEUROLOGICAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This is an add-on code for the resection of non-pituitary lesion(s) involving the sellar region that extends to the optic nerve(s), optic chiasm or hypothalamus. It is claimed in addition to N116 (Endonasal endoscopic resection of non-pituitary lesion(s)).
When to Use
- Use E888 only when the surgical resection of a non-pituitary lesion via endonasal approach (N116) involves direct extension to the optic nerves, optic chiasm, or hypothalamus.
- Claim this code when the anatomical complexity of the lesion requires dissection beyond the standard sellar boundaries defined in N116.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E888 without a corresponding N116 claim will result in an automatic rejection, as it is strictly an add-on code.
- Attempting to claim E888 for pituitary-origin lesions is an audit risk; ensure the pathology is explicitly documented as non-pituitary to justify the code.
- Failure to document the specific involvement of the optic chiasm, optic nerves, or hypothalamus will lead to recovery of funds during a post-payment audit.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly describes the extension of the lesion into the specified neural structures to support the use of this premium code.
