G488

G488Chemodenervation injection - each additional major nerve and/or its branches same day

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Chemodenervation injection of an individual peripheral motor nerve using phenol, ethyl alcohol or similar non-anaesthetic chemical agents for reduction of focal spasticity, which may include electromyography (EMG) guidance. This code, G488, is specifically for each additional major nerve and/or its branches treated on the same day as part of a repeat or additional procedure within 30 days of a previous chemodenervation injection. It is intended to be billed in addition to G487.

When to Use

  • Use G488 to bill for each additional major nerve treated beyond the first nerve covered by G487 during the same session.
  • Apply G488 when performing a repeat chemodenervation procedure on a different peripheral motor nerve within 30 days of an initial G487 injection.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G488 for the same muscle treated with botulinum toxin on the same day will result in a payment of nil.
  • Attempting to use G488 for nerve blocks involving anaesthetic agents is incorrect; these must be billed under the specific Nerve Blocks section codes.
  • Claiming G488 without an associated G487 on the same claim will trigger a rejection as it is a secondary, add-on procedure code.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the primary procedure G487 is billed first to establish the base service before adding multiple units of G488 for subsequent nerves treated.
