G574 – Focused echocardiography study - technical component
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
A focused study is an examination limited to a single component of the cardiac assessment. This code, G574, represents the technical component of this service.
When to Use
- Use G574 when performing a limited point-of-care ultrasound to assess a specific cardiac parameter, such as pericardial effusion or left ventricular function, in an emergency setting.
- Use G574 for a targeted follow-up assessment within 14 days of a comprehensive echocardiogram (G575) to monitor a specific, previously identified abnormality.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming G574 for a comprehensive study; if the examination includes multiple components of cardiac assessment, G575 is the required code.
- Failing to maintain a permanent digital recording of the images and measurements, which is a mandatory requirement for audit compliance under section J23.
- Billing G574 in conjunction with a pregnancy ultrasound, which is explicitly prohibited by the Schedule of Benefits.
Billing Tips
- When performing this service in a hospital setting, remember that the payment is automatically adjusted to 86.10% of the fee to account for the technical component split.
