A re-assessment for an unscheduled patient provided by an Emergency Department Physician, as defined in . This service is for care provided during night hours, from 00:00h to 08:00h, as listed on page . Any physician on duty in the emergency department, regardless of specialty, must submit claims using these 'H' prefix listings. This applies to services rendered by a full- or part-time Emergency Department Physician working a pre-arranged shift, or for services rendered by an on-call physician where the service does not qualify for claiming a special visit premium.
When to Use
- Use H124 for a follow-up assessment of an emergency patient occurring specifically between 00:00 and 08:00 when the patient remains in the ED for further observation or pending results.
- Use this code when you are the assigned ED physician on shift and are performing a re-assessment that does not meet the criteria for a full consultation (H104) or initial assessment (H121).
Common Pitfalls
- Attempting to bill H112 (night premium) alongside H124 will result in a rejection, as H124 already accounts for the night-time service window.
- Billing H124 for a patient who has already been assessed by you during the same ED visit without a significant change in clinical status or a new clinical problem arising.
- Submitting H124 while also claiming other 'Assessments' or 'Consultations' for the same patient encounter, which violates the restricted code class rules.
Billing Tips
- If the patient meets the criteria for a trauma case, ensure you append the E420 trauma premium to the H124 claim to increase the fee by 50%.
- Always verify the time of service is strictly within the 00:00 to 08:00 window, as services outside this range require the use of H121, H122, or H123 instead.

With the exception of ultrasound guidance, (J149) or emergency department investigative ultrasound (H100), ultrasound services listed in this Schedule rendered by an Emergency Department Physician are not eligible for payment.
When any other service is rendered by the Emergency Department Physician in premium hours (and assessments may not be claimed), apply one of the following premiums per patient visit. H112: nights (00:00h to 08:00h).
