H102 – Comprehensive assessment and care
OHIP Obstetrics Code — CONSULTATIONS AND VISITS · Schedule of Benefits
H102 is for a comprehensive assessment and care service rendered by an Emergency Department Physician. As per , this service applies to physicians working a designated shift in a hospital emergency department or hospital urgent care clinic for unscheduled patients. This service is specifically for visits occurring on weekdays between 08:00h and 17:00h. As an assessment, it includes all the specific elements of an assessment as defined in , such as a direct physical encounter with the patient, history taking, physical examination, and providing advice to the patient. It also includes the common elements of all insured services as described in and .
When to Use
- Use H102 for a full comprehensive assessment of an unscheduled patient presenting to the ED during the weekday window of 08:00 to 17:00.
- Apply this code when you are the designated ED physician on shift and the patient requires a complete history and physical examination as defined in GP15.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not attempt to claim a special visit premium (e.g., K963) with H102, as these are explicitly prohibited for all 'H' prefix emergency department codes.
- Avoid billing H102 alongside H112 or H113, as these premium codes are mutually exclusive with the base assessment code during the same shift.
- Billing H102 outside of the 08:00-17:00 weekday timeframe will result in rejection; use H132, H152, or H122 for evening, weekend, or night shifts respectively.
Billing Tips
- Always append the 15% age premium for patients 65 or older to maximize the value of the H102 assessment.
- Ensure your documentation clearly reflects the comprehensive nature of the assessment, as H102 requires meeting all specific elements of a GP15 assessment.
