Represents the service of an Emergency Department Physician writing interim admission orders for a patient being admitted to the hospital. - H105 is payable in addition to the initial consultation or assessment rendered in the emergency department or Hospital Urgent Care Clinic provided that each service is rendered separately by the Emergency Department Physician. - H105 is an insured service payable at nil if the hospital admission assessment is payable to the Emergency Department Physician.
When to Use
- Use H105 when you are the ED physician writing admission orders for a patient who will be admitted under the care of a different physician or service.
- Use H105 when you have completed an initial ED assessment (e.g., A405) and are required to provide interim orders while the patient awaits transfer to an inpatient bed.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing H105 when you are also billing the hospital admission assessment (e.g., H065) for the same patient; the claim will be rejected or paid at nil.
- Failing to ensure the service is rendered separately from the initial ED assessment, which can lead to audit scrutiny regarding the necessity of the interim orders.
Billing Tips
- Always append the appropriate time-based premium (H112, H113, or H114) to H105 to ensure you are compensated for the specific time of day the orders were written.
