K301
K301 – Telephone modality indicator for virtual care
OHIP Consultation & Visit Premium Codes Code · Schedule of Benefits
A modality indicator used to identify that a Comprehensive Virtual Care Service was delivered using Telephone technology (audio only). It must be included on claims for services listed in Appendix J - Section 1 when rendered within an Existing/Ongoing Patient-Physician Relationship.
When to Use
- Use K301A when providing a comprehensive assessment or counseling service listed in Appendix J to an existing patient via audio-only telephone.
- Apply K301A when a visit starts as a video call but the patient's connection fails, resulting in more than 50% of the total time being spent on the telephone.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing K301A for a patient who does not have an existing, ongoing relationship with your practice, which should instead be billed under Limited Virtual Care codes like A102.
- Submitting K301A for services rendered to hospital inpatients or LTC residents without meeting the specific exemption criteria regarding MRP status and recent physical encounters.
- Failing to include the K301A indicator on the claim, which will result in the service being rejected or paid at an incorrect rate.
Billing Tips
- Always bill the original in-person fee code alongside K301A; the Ministry's system will automatically apply the 85% or 95% reduction based on the service code used.
- Ensure your documentation explicitly states 'Telephone' as the modality to justify the K301A indicator during a potential audit.
