Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) support is a time-based service payable for providing MAID assessment, support and counselling to patients requesting MAID, and provision of MAID by a physician. MAID support is only eligible for payment when rendered personally by the physician.
When to Use
- Use K321 for time spent beyond the initial 50 minutes covered by A320 or C320 during a MAID consultation or assessment.
- Use K321 for the actual time spent performing the MAID procedure itself, provided it is not billed concurrently with other insured services.
- Use K321 for counseling sessions with a patient who has submitted a formal written request for MAID, even if the patient is ultimately found ineligible or withdraws consent on the day of the planned procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing K321 concurrently with other office or hospital visit codes, which is strictly prohibited as K321 is mutually exclusive with all other insured services except A320/C320.
- Failing to record exact start and stop times in the medical record, which is a mandatory requirement for all time-based MAID claims and leads to automatic rejection.
- Attempting to bill K321 for chart review, administrative preparation, or travel time, as the code only covers direct patient-facing assessment, support, and procedure time.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the start time for K321 begins only after the initial 50 minutes of an A320 or C320 consultation have been exhausted to avoid overlapping time claims.
- When exceeding 12 units of K321 in a single day, append the manual review indicator to the claim and attach detailed documentation to prevent automatic denial.
