A special Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) consultation is a consultation conducted for the purpose of assessing the eligibility for MAID in a patient who has submitted a written request for MAID. This service is rendered by a physician who provides all the elements of a consultation and spends a minimum of fifty (50) minutes of direct contact with the patient exclusive of time spent rendering any other separately billable intervention to the patient.
When to Use
- Bill A320 when a physician spends a minimum of 50 minutes in direct patient contact for a MAID eligibility assessment, following a written request for MAID.
- Use A320 for an outpatient MAID consultation where the physician provides all elements of a consultation, including a written report to the referring provider.
- A320 is appropriate for a physician providing a comprehensive MAID assessment, ensuring the 50-minute direct patient contact requirement is met and documented.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A320 when less than 50 minutes of direct patient contact occurred, as this time must be exclusively for the MAID consultation.
- Failing to record start and stop times for the patient encounter in the medical record, which can lead to claim adjustments or denials.
- Billing other insured services or premiums during the same time block as A320, as only K321 (MAID support) is permitted as an add-on service.
Billing Tips
