C320Special Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) consultation

OHIP Surgical Procedures Code · Schedule of Benefits

A special Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) consultation is a consultation conducted for the purpose of assessing the eligibility for MAID in a patient who has submitted a written request for MAID. This service is a consultation rendered by a physician who provides all the elements of a consultation and spends a minimum of fifty (50) minutes of direct contact with the patient exclusive of time spent rendering any other separately billable intervention to the patient.

When to Use

  • Use C320 when performing a formal eligibility assessment for a hospitalized patient who has already submitted a written request for MAID.
  • Use this code when the assessment requires a minimum of 50 minutes of direct, face-to-face patient contact to satisfy the complex clinical and legal requirements of the MAID assessment process.

Common Pitfalls

  • Claiming C320 without a formal written request from the patient on file, which is a mandatory prerequisite for this specific consultation code.
  • Including non-patient-facing time, such as chart review or report writing, in the 50-minute calculation; only direct, face-to-face contact counts toward the minimum threshold.
  • Failing to document precise start and stop times in the medical record, which is the primary audit trigger for time-based consultation codes.

Billing Tips

  • If the assessment exceeds 50 minutes, bill C320 as the base consultation and append K321 units for the additional time, ensuring the K321 time starts only after the initial 50-minute block is complete.
  • Ensure the referring physician or NP has provided a formal request, as the constituent elements of a standard consultation must be met to satisfy the Schedule of Benefits requirements.
